1. News research from YouGov shows that while the uptake and usage of social media remains high as many as 41% of the UK online population claim to be getting bored of social media and say they will use it less. It points to Facebook’s usage while almost universal among the young starting to plateau and points to the rise of niche social sites. For instance it says finance site moneysavingexpert.com has as many active users as Twitter.

2. Only 5% of British people would care if brands did not exist, according to research by Havas and MPG that placed Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's in the world's top 10 "meaningful" retail brands. The UK had four brands in the list's top 20: Marks & Spencer was at number six; Sainsbury’s at number seven; Tesco at 11; John Lewis came in at 15; and Waitrose at 20.

3. Metro is to publish a weekend edition for the first time, in print and for tablets, as a temporary offer during the Olympic Games in July and August. Metro will produce the Saturday editions across the five weeks of the Olympic and Paralympic games, with 325,000 copies available on Saturday and Sunday mornings in London. A tablet edition will be published later on the Saturday that will include coverage of the day's Olympic events, previews of the evening events and features on the "hot" athletes and notable sporting battles.

4. Channel 4 is to launch a new catch-up TV channel featuring shows that have created the most "buzz". The station - 4Seven - will launch later this year and is the broadcaster's first new service since 2005. The new channel will be on all major platforms. C4 already has spin-off channels E4 and More4, together with its +1 services. It went through a period of continually extending its portfolio, but later abandoned much-heralded plans to launch a set of radio stations.

5. A survey by the British Retail Consortium said retail sales remained sluggish last month - with like-for-like sales down 0.3% year on year in February. However, total retail sales were up 2.3% year on year following a 2.1% rise in January - a figure which is more in line with official data (which includes smaller shops. Falling inflation has eased the squeeze on household finances and halted the slide in consumer confidence.
