The Sunday Times and Newsprinters enjoyed a night of unreserved success at the 2011 Newspaper Awards on May 24.
The awards - now in their 15th year - recognise technical innovation and production excellence, encompassing areas such as content, presentation, production, printing and finishing
The Sunday Times enjoyed a fantastic night, with a string of impressive awards. For the third year running the title was awarded ‘Weekend Newspaper of the Year’, credited as being “in a class of its own, with its unswerving breadth of appeal, excellent journalistic content and superb print quality”. This award was followed with ‘Newspaper App of the Year’ for the groundbreaking Sunday Times iPad app, ‘Best Use of Colour’ and ‘Digitally Printed Newspaper of the Year’ (Malta print site).
The Sunday Times was also highly commended for both ‘Newspaper Design of the Year’ and ‘Best Use of New Media’.
John Witherow said:
"The credit for all this goes to the production team at The Sunday Times, especially Simon Regan-Edwards, Simon Pumphrey and Louis Green. I’d also like to thank John Millward and GOS publishing. It is the professionalism of all these people, their hard work and attention to detail that gets this paper out each week, largely on time, and in good shape. Credit of course should also go to Newsprinters for continually producing a fine product, and to the iPad team for developing such a fabulous app".
Newsprinters, Broxbourne were awarded the Newspaper Printer of the Year, winning almost universal praise for its “top quality which showed fantastic consistency of colour – clean copies and even ink weights and density.” This made it a treble for Newsprinters as Knowsley have won this category the previous two years. In addition, Newsprinters, Eurocentral were ‘highly commended’ by the judges, showing “superb quality production and excellent registration”.
Newsprinters Environmental Group was rightfully joint winner in the Environmental Initiative of the Year category, “demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainable operations”.
Brian McGee, Managing Director, Newsprinters said:
"This double success reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff and is testimony to the world class standards and performance being delivered at all three sites."
The Eureka supplement from The Times was highly commended in the ‘National Colour Supplement of the Year’ for “bold stand-out design, exciting illustrations and layout”.
