The News of the World picked up Scoop of the Year and News Reporter of the Year, while The Times won more prizes than any other newspaper at the British Press Awards last night.
News of the World's exposé on the Pakistani cricket corruption scandal, which hit the headlines around the world, won Scoop of the Year and Mazher Mahmood rightly took News Reporter of the Year for the stunning exclusive.
"The winning story was the definition of a scoop for its jaw-dropping impact", said Sky presenter Anna Botting, who presented the award. Judges felt it had "100 per cent wow-factor and global impact."
Accepting the award on Mahmood’s behalf, News of the World editor Colin Myler said: “Once again, Maz has struck gold. But I would also like to mention the team that makes the News of the World the greatest newspaper in the world for me.”
Speaking about Mahmood, the News of the World's investigations editor, judges said: “The winner was outstanding, with huge impact and brilliant execution. He was the unanimous choice in a high quality field.”
Stephen Moyes won Showbiz Reporter of the Year for News of the World and the Fabulous magazine team of Rachel Richardson, Joely Carey and Mark Hayman collected their award for Supplement of the Year. Judges described Fabulous as "Slick, confident and full of energy and ideas and high production values. Simply entertaining."
The Times won five awards for its outstanding journalism. Business and Finance Journalist of the Year was won by David Robertson, Caitlin Moran outdid herself by winning two awards this year in comparison with last year's single prize (Interviewer and Critic of the Year) and Matthew Parris took this year's Columnist of the Year award. Peter Brookes collected Cartoonist of the Year for the second year running, taking his tally to five since 2002.
The Sunday Times capped off a successful night for News International with Brian Deer winning Specialist Journalist of the Year for his revelations about the MMR scandal.
Congratulations to all of our winners!
