NI secures Premier League rights

From August 2013, football games will be available on The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times' digital platforms, including exclusive rights for "near-live" clips on mobile devices.

In a memo to staff, Mike Darcey, chief executive of News International, said: "Being able to offer our customers access to the most compelling and competitive football league in the world will be a huge draw as we look to increase our subscriber base.

"And with the growing number of smartphone and tablet users, this is also an important step forward in our digital strategy and securing the long-term success of our titles."

The three-year deal for the 380 Premier League games means NI titles will be able to present up to 30-second clips of key moments during live matches via mobile devices (except for games played on Saturday at 3pm). Clips of up to 60-seconds from each game will also be available for a week after match day via their respective digital platforms.

Subscribers will be able to access the clips on the new Sun tablet app, which is due to be launched in the next few months, The Sun's smartphone app and via The Times and The Sunday Times digital products.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "We are extremely pleased with this exciting development that sees News International move further into the digital media space through the acquisition of our UK near-live clip rights."
